Next week I will be attending Thinking Digital 2015, one of the leading events in the North East digital calendar. I’m not sure if this is the third time or the fourth that I have been. It doesn’t matter because they are great events and I take so much away from them. They are an opportunity to recharge your batteries and reflect upon the dramatic role that our industry plays, in all of its guises, in changing the world. Here are ten things that I’m looking forward to:
Inspiring speakers – The speakers are always fascinating and inspiring. Their presentations fill you with a mixture or excitement and a feeling that somehow you have wasted your own life. It’s an odd sensation. Not all the topics are directly about information technology yet all have some relationship. We’ve had talks on guerrilla gardening, bringing pigeons back from extinction and a bloke who managed to visit every country in the world without going up in the air. It’s a broad church
Think about the future – While I’m in the audience I get to think about how digital technologies are changing the world in which we live. When I look back to when I started work, or was at school, I see that everything has changed. The world is transformed and we’re being both a part of it and being carried along with it. The future is unpredictable and unstoppable. They say that the past is a different country and I guess the same is true of the future. It is a country we’ll be visiting shortly so get ready for the trip of a lifetime.
Get to meet new and exciting people – The Sage Gateshead, where the event is held, is going to be filled with like-minded people. Over the two days I’m going to bump into and be introduced to people who I’ve never met. We’re going to share experiences, exchange contacts, tweet each other and get up to all sorts of mischief.
Create possibilities for ICT Services – In amongst all of these great things I will be thinking about how this is going to affect us back at base. What trends are emerging? What opportunities will these create? How will we rise to the challenge? How will I take all this back into the business?
Say hi to Herb Kim – He’s the guy that puts it all on. It’s his baby and he does a great job. I harbour an ambition to play some part in a future Thinking Digtial. I’m not good enough to be one of the main speakers but perhaps a fringe event would do. I’ve known herb for some time but I’ll make a start by saying hi.
Lots of ideas for my blog – That goes without saying.
Reacquaint myself with colleagues from across the country – There are people who go to TDC that I see every year. I’m looking forward to chatting with them and catching up with what has gone on in their lives.
Get blown away by others’ achievements – I will. It’s amazing what people achieve through determination and obsession. Their tales fill me with the desire to get up and do. They refill my tank.
Think about where we are now – It’s not just the future that is important. I get to reflect on what we have achieved so far and the part we have played in this exciting transformation. Our future is grounded in our present.
Learn new stories – I’m going to take away many new stories that I can weave into our own narrative over the next twelve months. There is nothing more human than a story and Thinking Digtial is filled with fabulous and mind-blowing histories.
I’m really really looking forward to #TDC15. Can you tell?
