A year of work in progress – day 2

Day 2 – 3 January 2014

Boy was I tired.  For the first time in ages it was the alarm that woke me.  I’m not used to real work but I was back at Meadowfield this morning to help out in the stores once more.  The schools come back on Monday and so we need to be as ready as we can be.  The drive in was fairly easy, even getting round Durham but next week will be a different kettle of fish.

When I arrived I found the stores to be in good shape so I went down to the Design and Technology team workshop and asked Alan if he needed a hand.  You couldn’t see the place for the stuff that was lying about so once again we got stuck in to get the place tidied up and the main furniture where it should be.  Bob, the Operations manager and Jamie the caretaker were a great help as well and now everything is looking more like a place of work.  It has been good working with people in my own team who I did not really know as well as I should.

Our venture at Meadowfield is going to be great fun.  It is a chance for us to have a new start and a fresh approach to the services we provide.  It is also an opportunity to make new friends with the people at Direct Services and to try and work with them to help improve our mutual business.  Some amusing things go on here and it takes a fresh pair of eyes to see them and after the Christmas break I’m raring to get stuck in.  We’re going to have some courageous conversations over the coming months as we learn to live as good neighbours.

Learning points for today?  If you lead by example then others will follow; there are people who I work with who I should get to know better and; my team can make a difference to the culture here as long as we don’t give up.

Today’s enjoyment rating 9/10 (only because my feet are sore from the safety shoes).
