Day 81 – 7 May 2014
It was bound to happen that a day would come along which I was not able to enjoy and yesterday was it. I suppose that one day out of eighty isn’t bad and I should be grateful that when working in such a volatile role where the opportunity for things to go wrong is huge that it doesn’t happen more often.
The problems had started on Saturday morning on a bank holiday weekend and the team eventually got everything sorted by early yesterday evening nearly four days later, thankfully of which only one was a working day. Saying that I had no enjoyment was wrong however. Seeing people rally round, to understand the issues and come up with solutions was a pleasure but not one I want to go through too often. The ICT Services is at its best when trying to get things back working.
I take a real pride in the work that we do to help the Council deliver its services and when things don’t work as they should I take it to heart. One of my colleagues once said to me that I take things too personally and he was right. I do take things personally, I hope that I accept my responsibilities and that the day I don’t is the day that I should leave.
Today was the start of a new era, a new dawn and hopefully another exciting period to look forward to. One of the managers from a neighbouring organisation joined our Senior Leadership Team and over the next six to eight months we will be exploring opportunities to work more closely.
Before that I met with Keith in Children’s and Adults Services to talk about the exciting changes coming on the back of the Care Bill that will allow clients to set and buy their own care provision. We’ll need a new e-marketplace which will integrate with our internal social care systems.
Afternoon was Resources Management Team and the shredder lorry didn’t turn up.
Learning points for today: Adding someone else to the team extends the length of the meeting; Screech from Saved by the Bell could be an ideal role model; you can tell which buildings are going to shut by the high numbers of people being located to them and; you can get a thermal comfort log.
Today’s enjoyment rating 8/10 – so much better than yesterday.
