A month in lockdown – K is for kitchen

K2020

The A-Z blogging challenge is quite straightforward, blog everyday in April, except Sundays, with subjects that follow the alphabet. It’s all a bit of fun. My subject is ‘A month in lock down’.

K is for kitchen. I’ve already said how I am spending much more time in the garden. The same is also true of the kitchen. Usually I am out of the house for three days a week and am very lucky to come home to a cooked meal. Now I am in seven days a week and have had the opportunity to enjoy another pastime of mine, cooking.

I am not a cook but I like cooking. I like the way that the ingredients come together to make something tasty and interesting, both to the eyes and the palate. It is like alchemy how raw ingredients transform into a tasty meal. The sum is greater than the parts.

During the lockdown, access to food has not been difficult. All of the food shops are open and some neighbours still get their deliveries from the supermarkets. At first a few items were in short supply but this is not the case now. The only real restriction is in trying to limit the number of times you go to the food store. Before COVID-19 we may have gone four or five times a week, perhaps even every day and now I try to go once every ten days or so. This presents the challenge of trying to think of meals in advance and buying things with a long enough date.

Mealtimes have taken on an even greater significance during this time and the kitchen reigns as the most important room in the house. It is where we spend most of our time, making food, hot drinks or just generally chatting. Indeed it is in the kitchen that I am writing this blog.

Stay safe.
