26 Deadly sins R is for Revenge Porn

Throughout the month of April, I am going to be using the A-Z blogging challenge to update the seven deadly sins with my suggested twenty six more modern versions.  It would seem that to sin is not a modern invention though these days there are so many more ways to be inventive.

R is for Revenge Porn.  This is a nasty one, filled with bile and spite.  They say that revenge is a dish best served cold yet this is no way to treat people, hot or cold.

Revenge porn refers to the growing phenomenon of people posting sexually explicit images of former partners online without the consent of the individual pictured.  In many cases, pictures or footage are obtained with consent by a partner during the couple’s relationship before being shared following a break-up.

It is believed that more than thirty different internet sites are used in the UK alone which specialise in revenge porn content.  Who does this but more worryingly who sets these sites up?

The first known site dedicated to providing a platform for revenge porn postings began in 2010. On such sites, videos containing sexually explicit content can be posted that also include the subject’s name, social network identities, where they lived and even where they worked.

It is most cruel because it breaks the sacred trust between couples.  An intimate moment, however misguided becomes as public as it gets.  Personal proclivities become public property.

Of course the answer is not to allow yourself to be photographed in compromising states of undress, yet in the heat of the moment, passions take over.  You should never put anything online that you wouldn’t want your granny to see.

Thou shalt not use intimate photos for revenge.
