Throughout the month of April, I am going to be using the A-Z blogging challenge to update the seven deadly sins with my suggested twenty six more modern versions. It would seem that to sin is not a modern invention though these days there are so many more ways to be inventive.
K is for Kicker. When I heard this word I hadn’t got a clue what they were talking about. I can no longer keep up with the changes to the language I think I speak. I am learning Spanish and Dutch but at times English is passing me by. Every year there are on average a thousand new words added to the Oxford English Dictionary. A new word is created every ninety eight minutes. Last year’s new words went from aggrupation to zetta, although the last one is a combination form. My spell check recognised aggrupation which already has a perfectly good word in either a group or an organisation. If you group words together you can form an aggrupation.
The kicker means the detail, usually unpleasant that changes everything. It is a disadvantageous point or circumstance, usually concealed or unnoticed. For example, the tickets are free but the kicker is that you have to wait in line for hours to get them. It can be a surprising change or turn of events, as in the kicker was that their friends knew it before they did. Would a simple but not do?
Is this tautology gone mad in the name of hipsterdom. I have just made up the word hipsterdom to mean the domain of a person, usually young, who is trendy, stylish, or progressive in an unconventional way. It must have been ninety eight minutes since the last one.
Though shalt not make up words unnecessarily.
