A year of work in progress – day 9

Day 9 – 14 January 2014

Wow, a very quiet day.  Only three meetings, one in the morning, one at midday and one in the afternoon and the best bit was that my first was at Northumberland County Hall, less than a kilometre from home.  Number 8 on my 10 things I’m going to do this year is collaborate with another authority and so an early opportunity to engage is most welcome.

We already collaborate a lot across the public sector locally, including other authorities, Fire, Police and Health but we will need more of the same as we adapt to the financial climate that we are in.  Demand for services is becoming more sophisticated and more integrated and public bodies cannot work in isolation from each other.  Opportunities will only come about by being engaged.  A good meeting.

The second was a quick heads-up sales meeting.  Our markets are changing very rapidly especially the education sector and I wanted to be clear of any opportunities and threats that we have become aware of since the New Year.  There were a few – there always are – but we have a plan.

In between I started to write a bid for a share of some resource around a Big Data idea I have in my head.  Getting it out of there onto virtual paper was a hardr task than I’d hoped and I’ll have to come back to it tomoorw.

The last meeting of the day was our Resources Management Team meeting.  A fairly quiet one as there has been Christmas since the last.  I had one report but there is still some work to do on it until it’s good to go.  It was Avril’s last meeting before she retires and so there were real tears.

Learning points for today:  Being tired is not good for your drive; People will always wind you up if you let them and I need to rise above it sometimes; There is opportunity out there – look for it and; Everyone’s career comes to an end some day L

Today’s enjoyment rating 8/10 – Felt flat at the start but got better as it went along.
