It had to happen sooner or later and it did. It was only a fleeting moment, a wink of an eye, a fraction of a second but for a while today I felt that I had watched too much sport. This has been the summer of sport and there has been so much of it on the television and today I had finally had my fill.
I have even been trying to multitask and keep up with things on multimedia using web, phone, radio, teletext and of course the television across all of its different channels. I think the crunch came last night though when I was flicking through the channels to find the Berdych vs. Murray match in the semi-finals of the US Open. I don’t have Sky Sports, I probably would have reached this tipping point much earlier if I had and so Eurosport was my only option but they weren’t showing it live. Out came the laptop and the BBC were doing text updates but I found that they were also doing live commentary on BBC5 Live. I listened to this on the laptop and on my phone when I had to wander around the house using the excellent TuneIn app.
And this meant that my eyes were free to watch other sports, an opportunity I was determined not to waste and for the almost four hours of the tennis I flicked between the Paralympics (which have been excellent), the penultimate stage of La Vuelta (which has also been very good) and web updates. This morning I watched the tennis match repeated as well as some reruns of the action from last night’s Paralympics and by lunchtime it was all just too much for me. My head was fuddled, I felt nauseous and I had to turn the television off and go out and get some fresh air. I even resorted to washing the car I felt that bad.
But I’m not too worried, it was only a temporary blip and I was back in time to catch the last few laps of La Vuelta this afternoon. I think I’ve caught up and am writing this while watching the recorded highlights of the Tour of Britain which started today and lasts for the rest of the week. I’m ready for the tennis final tomorrow night and after that I’ll need to take a break.
I thought I would never hear myself say this but please, please, please can some turn the sport off, even if it’s only for a couple of days to allow me to empty my tank.
