Google has put up my monthly subscription. I understand that prices go up, especially in times of higher inflation, yet the amount has gone up considerably, at least in percentage terms. The reason given is that many more new features have been added to the functionality, especially around AI. The problem is that I didn’t ask for these features and, to be frank, don’t want them. I’m faced with a Hobson’s choice – take it or leave it.
I can’t leave it so I guess I’ll have to suck it up.
For me, the jury is still out on AI. I am sure there are very valid applications for the technology which will emerge over the coming months and years but most of what I am seeing is peripheral and, at best, nice to have. I can read my own email and am happy to write my replies.
The dystopian views from the train window on the way to Stockton were apt. I was on my way to see a friend who is embracing AI more enthusiastically than I am. He has very clear views about the role the technology will play in shaping humanity yet I remain more sceptical. Although I am not hugely older than him I have seen so many new technologies launched which were going to reshape the world. Many have not had the breakthroughs expected though some have had a marked effect. Those that do make it, such as social media, are often used in ways that weren’t expected or anticipated. The Utopian sales pitch rarely delivers what the brochure says.
This is what makes me sceptical. Humans are very resourceful. It is almost impossible to say what they will do with the tools that are given to them, yet I can guarantee that it will not be as expected. Yes, AI is going to have an effect on the way we live and work, especially the latter. People do the unexpected and unpredictable. We will adapt to AI. Some will embrace the technology and use it to its full potential, while others will reject it and find any way they can to avoid it. Others will find other ways to use it, humorously, maliciously or otherwise.
AI is definitely here to stay but in what shape or format it is too early to say. I wouldn’t write off the future of our species quite yet.
