It’s been a long time coming but we have finally decided to come off Twitter at CyberNorth.
I still find it hard to call it by its new name as that is when the rot set in for me. When I first started using Twitter it was a new and exciting platform. OK, a lot of what was said was mundane or rubbish yet the human condition is often mundane and rubbish. People would let you know what they were up to, how they felt, what was exciting them and what they felt about world events. I would get most of my news from the site.
Now it’s a cesspit. Comment has become bile, opinion has become opinionated and interest has become intolerance. There is no middle ground, you either hate or are a hater. The community, if there is one left, has been riven into two factions. Spending time on the platform has become depressing and not good for your health, mental or physical.
More importantly, for CyberNorth, we feel that its values and those of its owner are incompatible with our own. Continuing to associate ourselves with the platform may ultimately be deleterious but who knows? Cynically, who cares? Perhaps the real focus should be on how many people are using it and whether they are from our target market.
The decision has been made and a holding post has been put on the site saying we’re taking a break. You never know, we may well be back. Let’s see what happens and what difference it makes. Our website is still functioning and we are on other social media platforms.
In the meantime, I am sticking with my own account on Twitter. Everything I have said for CyberNorth is equally true for me yet I still enjoy the sporadic foray into politics. I guess I am too old for my own brand to be tarnished. I just need to be careful not to spend too long on the site for my health, mental or physical.
