I have been past your way on many occasions, hurtling through space and time, twisting and turning through its warped fabric. We share the same sun. I have passed quite close this time, within twenty eight thousands of your kilometres but distance means nothing to me. I have been closer though and there have been times when we haven’t seen each other for millennia. I have been watching you, watching and listening since the dawn of time. Now I know that you have been watching me. I came close to one of your satellites as I flew by.
I have known of you for a long time but you knew nothing of me at all until a year or so ago. I’ve watched you grow, develop and take control but for you I’ve only just been discovered. It’s as if I didn’t exist before. I’m not big enough or important enough to have been given a name. I am not a god or a winged messenger or a mythical creature, I am just a lump of rock that has not been sucked up into one of the larger planets, yet. But now you have given me a number, 2012 DA14. How quaint. These things are of no importance.
I am not vain but one cannot help be flattered by all of the interest in me that you have shown. It will be a fleeting interest though. I will be gone in a day and during this time the papers will be filled with apocalyptic predictions. There will be demands for more intelligence and inevitably for more money and time will be given to the soothsayers and doom-mongers. But then I will have disappeared, slipped away from your scopes, slipped away from your front pages and slipped away into the annals of your insignificant history.
I don’t have the intellect to work these things out but I gather that I will be back in another thirty circuits. Who knows, I may be closer or I may be further away, only time will tell. What I do know is that I have time on my side and one day, sometime way in the future our paths will cross again only this time it will be more intimate and we will become one. If you are still around, you might remember me then.
