I want a business like Ikea

I want a business like Ikea.  No, not a flat pack furniture business although this has been something that I have considered (It was going to be based in Spain and be called Ex-Pat Flat Pack).  No, I want a business that runs like the instructions you get when you buy a piece of self-assembly furniture form the iconic Swedish company.

It comes in a box and it delivers what it promises.  The instructions are simple.  They use drawings wherever possible as words can be a limiter in an international business.  Indeed, the only words are there for safety warnings or to advise you how to get help, should you need it.  All unnecessary detail is stripped out.

Take a Dave laptop table as an example.  On the cover of the assembly instructions is a picture of the finished item, the expected outcome.  On the next page it shows you a breakdown of the components it is made up from, the type and quantity of each and any tools that you need to build it.  By this point you have been able to confirm that this is the item that you want and check that all of the parts are there.  There then follows a step by step set of instructions on how to assemble it to achieve the expected outcome.  It is simple and it works.

Quality is built into the process to make sure that the customer gets what they purchased and at a price point that they were looking for.  But quality is designed in throughout: in the finished product; in the build process; in the packaging and in the marketing.

This is the kind of business that I want.  This is the kind of business that I want mine to become.  I want a business where quality is built into the contact point with the customer so that the information required to solve their issue or meet their need is captured.  I want a business where quality is built into the product or service delivery, where everything that is needed comes at the same time, the parts, the tools, the people and it is easy to understand what needs to be done to deliver the expected outcome.  I want a business where quality is built into its marketing so that the customer can understand what to expect, when and where to expect it and how much they will be asked to pay.

This is the kind of business that I want to be in.  I want a business like Ikea.
