Addicted

I’ve realised that I am addicted to electronic communication.  I just can’t get enough of it.  I’m on emails, tweets, texts, chat and even the odd poke or tag, basically anything I can get my grubby e-paws on.  Desktop, laptop, smart phone, they are all the same to me.  I don’t really know how it got to be so bad but I have now realised I have a problem as my inbox is empty and I’m scratting round for something to do.

I’ve been through some stuff in my time.  Back in the day I could make do with a bit of CompuServe or some Hotmail or my Psion but then that just wasn’t enough.  Freeserve became Fsnet, Google mail became Gmail and MSN migrated into Outlook Office Communicator.  An upgrade from Exchange 2007 to 2010 was needed just to feed my 200 emails a day habit.  I never really thought about it, I believed it was all under control but now I realise that I have just been kidding myself.

Short message services have also coursed through my neurons and synapses.  I started out with old school thumb based texting but now I‘ve raised my game with a post Personal Digital Assistant age Smart Phone with full qwerty key board and touch screen heaven.

Don’t even mention social media.  That gave me a whole new buzz, a whole new level of hit.  When email is ever scarce, say at a weekend or late at night then social media can always be relied upon.  There is always someone else out there.  I can hide behind a veil of anonymity and do stuff that I just wouldn’t dare during work hours.  Also, I’m among friends, not real friends but people with the same issues as me, people with the same likes and dislikes as me and, I realise now, people with the same problems as me.

If it’s something quick and easy that I’m after then a couple of tweets won’t go a miss.  If it’s something a bit more prolonged then how about a bit of Facebook or even an injection of video through YouTube but if I am after something that really taxes my brain then some concentrated Word Press hits the spot.

I’m starting to come down now, feel a little better.  These few hundred words, dashed off at pace have settled my craving, for now at least and I’ve just noticed a couple of emails have dropped into my inbox.  If you have been affected by any of the issues raised in this blog then I would love to hear from you.  Perhaps you can quirt me something electronically.
