Enjoying international football

It is also a well-known fact that beer and football are a (very) few of the things that occupy men’s minds.  Watching football makes you thirsty and drinking beer makes you start talking about the beautiful game.  Beer and football were made for each other.  It is unlikely that you need an excuse but just in case, here is an exciting way to combine the two during an international football competition.

Firstly you need to get the fixture list and work out which team are playing each other.  Then it’s down to the shops to buy beer from the respective countries which can be quite a challenge in itself.  This shouldn’t present too much of a problem if it is a European championship, San Miguel for instance if Spain are playing, Kronenbourg if it is France and Peroni if it happens to be Italy (other beers are available).  It will be a little more difficult if the game is against a side like Iran or Egypt perhaps.  You could look for a bottle of alcohol free Istak or a can or two of Delster from Iran.  As for Egypt, Stella beer has been in production since the 19th century.  Good luck with these.

Now it’s down to the real business.  As the two teams come out to shake hands and play the national anthems, crack open a bottle of the beer from the home side’s country. At half time it’s the other way around and the away team country gets a chance.  If you want to go truly international and the game is on neutral turf then a beer for the host country may be in order.  During the game, if either side scores then open one from that country and so on.  In this way a goalless draw is a pleasant drink with your mates while a 4 – 3 thriller is quite a session.  If the match goes to penalties then you are going to find it hard to keep up but I’m sure you will try your best.

You’ll really get in the spirit (you could try spirits, especially for penalties) and you’ll feel like you’re part of the competition.  It may be worth getting in some training in advance.
