Who are they?

I don’t know who they are but they’re responsible for so much that goes on around here. I hear it all the time. They’ve only gone and done this or they’ve only gone and done that.

I don’t know what they do either but they seem to have their fingers in so many pies, they seem to be in control at all of the major organisations but they have no names and they have no faces. They must have influence though but in a negative way, they seem to be able to make everything grind to a halt or they seem to be able to make everything worse.

They seem to be behind everything that goes wrong. Have you seen what they’re up to now? They’ve dug up the high street and they only just repaired it from the last time.

They ought to know better but perhaps they do as they seem to be the ones pulling all the strings, they are the ones with the hands on all the levers, they are the power behind the throne but they represent everything that is wrong with this country. Yes they do.

There’s another group as well though, who are always at the bottom of things– them, that’s right, them upstairs or them in accounts.

They must be related to them but I’m never sure if they are the same as them. They seem to be a little vague, a little more aloof than them. They always keep a low profile, they are hard to catch but I’ve definitely seen them around. How did they get into power and who put them in charge. They’ve no idea what they are doing, everyone says so and as for them, well it’s always them isn’t it?

You can define them by where they sit, which room, which department but they are referred to with a dismissive wave of the hand or an angry gesticulation. It’s all a bit of a mystery. They are all around us, ever present, omnipotent but I don’t know how this happened. Personally, I blame them!
