What is the oldest story ever told, boy meets girl, good versus evil? How about creation, the first story ever to be told and the answer to the biggest questions that we ever have to answer? Why am I here? What is my purpose? What came before me and will life exist after I have gone?
All cultures around the world have their own story. Most either look up to the heavens or down into the bowls of the earth for an explanation of how the void that came before the earth was filled. Most have a mythical supreme being that creates in the beginning, a man but not a man, an entity that language fails to describe because it is beyond language. In many a man is made first but a woman soon follows to keep him company and to procreate. Many have more than a grain of truth in them as a way of explaining how the earth came about.
But this is not the point of my tale. I don’t wish to write about some quasi-religious experience in terms of creation but rather to think about the role of creativity in human life, how creativity has created who we are.
We all have a need to create, it is a primeval yearning within all of us. Some of us create through art, the painting of pictures or the moulding of clay, whereas others create through cooking or gardening or model making. Some need to create a change in society, some need to create a legacy or a dynasty, some need to create a place in history. Others need to create a commotion or a mess or create confusion. Whether it is big or small, creation is a fundamental aspect of being human.
For me, I feel that I am able to create in a number of ways. On a larger level my efforts are concentrated on creating a sustainable organisation for which I am accountable. I do this by developing a deep understanding of how the organisation works, what stops the work from flowing and working with my colleagues to prevent these things from happening in the future. On a smaller scale, I suppose that this is why I started to try and write this blog. Neither comes to me that easily and I couldn’t say if I am being successful or not but then nothing that is worthwhile is easy.
Creation is the oldest story ever told because it is the story of human kind. It’s a story we know before we are even told it. It is the story of our own creation and what we are destined to create, it is visceral, it is in our genes and it is in our soul.
There are many different but similar creation stories from all across the world and here is a good place to find some: Creation Stories from around the World, Encapsulations of some traditional stories explaining the origin of the Earth, its life, and its peoples http://www.gly.uga.edu/railsback/CS/CSIndex.html
