County Durham is a big place, believe me I know. I’ve spent all day driving between the nine different buildings from which my team is working, scattered across the County. The drive from Tanfield to Crook was squally but I had the wind behind me on the way to Spennymoor. Seaham was definitely bracing and the heavens opened when I finally got to County Hall.
It is a big place of around 800 square miles with over 500 thousand people and nearly a quarter of a million properties.
It is also a beautiful place with high moors and dales in the West, through to a spectacular coastline in the East. In the middle is the small and picturesque city of Durham itself, perched high above a crook in the river Wear. Its narrow and cobbled streets lead from the square to the castle and, of course, Britain’s favourite monument, Durham cathedral.
